We are greatly indebted to author Ed Nugent for allowing us
to share this Historical Sketch of Pace. He and his wife Becky are civic
minded residents of Pace, Florida. They both have more than 1,000 hours
as volunteers at the National Museum of Naval Aviation.
CTC Edward E. Nugent served his first nine years in the Navy
as an Aviation Boatswain Mate. He served aboard the USS Phillipine Sea,
USS Sitkoh, and USS Whindham Bay during the Korean
War. His only shore duty as an AB was at NAAS Barin Field, Foley, Alabama;
headin a crash crew and then in Pensacola as a beachmaster bringing in PBMs.
Nugent then served aboard the USS Shangri-La and USS
Boxer before being trained as a cryptologic technician and linguist.
He then served in Turkey, Cyprus, Washington D. C., and Guantanamo Bay,
Cuba where he retired after a tour as Communications Chief.
Chief Nugent has a degree in political science and is married
to the former Rebekah F. Huff. They have three children.
